Understanding Your Options

What Is Blown-In Attic Insulation and Is It Right for Your Home?

Blown-in insulation is loose-fill material, cellulose or fiberglass, machine-blown into your attic space. It conforms to every surface and fills every void, making it the go-to choice for most existing attics and retrofit projects.

Answers to the questions we hear most from NJ homeowners.

How much does blown-in attic insulation cost in NJ?

Most NJ homes cost between $1,500–$3,500 depending on attic size, current insulation levels, and material choice (cellulose vs. fiberglass). If old insulation removal is needed, that’s quoted separately. We provide free estimates with exact pricing before any work begins — no surprises.

  • Cellulose: Made of recycled paper treated for fire resistance. It has a higher R-value (insulating power) per inch and is better at blocking air leaks and sound.

  • Fiberglass: Made of spun glass. It’s naturally fire-resistant, doesn’t settle as much over time, and is generally more moisture-resistant than cellulose.

  • The old material is moldy or water-damaged.

  • There is a history of rodent infestation (to remove droppings/pheromones).

  • You want to perform “air sealing” (plugging holes where wire/pipes go into walls) before adding new layers.

  • Sealing entry points with steel wool or hardware cloth.

  • Sanitizing the area if there was a previous infestation.

  • Using borate-treated cellulose, which acts as a natural deterrent to many pests.

Under ideal conditions, it can last 20 to 30 years. However, its effectiveness can decrease if it settles significantly or gets compressed. Fiberglass tends to stay “fluffy” longer, while cellulose may settle by about 20% over a decade, slightly reducing its R-value.

Blown-in is almost always better for attics. * Batts (the big blankets) are hard to fit around joists and wires, leaving “thermal bridges” where heat escapes.

  • Blown-in creates a seamless monolithic layer that fills every nook and cranny, providing much better coverage.

For a standard NJ attic (approx. 1,000–1,500 sq. ft.), the actual blowing process usually takes 2 to 4 hours. If you include prep work and old insulation removal, it can become a full-day job (6–8 hours).
