Attic Services
Carteret's tightly packed two-families and capes went up mostly between the 1920s and the 1950s, built quickly and close together for the families working the plants along the Arthur Kill. Attic insulation in these houses is usually the original batts, thin against what this part of Middlesex County expects an attic to carry today. Sealing the top-plate gaps has to happen before the fresh insulation gets blown in.

Squirrels chew wiring and tear up insulation once they get into an attic. We remove them and close the entry points.
Squirrel Removal →A raccoon can wreck attic insulation and ductwork in weeks and leave dangerous droppings behind. Safe removal plus repair of the damage.
Raccoon Removal →Bats roost in quiet attic corners and their droppings contaminate everything below. Humane exclusion plus full cleanup.
Bat Removal →Mice squeeze in through gaps the width of a pencil, nest in the insulation and leave droppings across the attic floor. Removal, then sealing the gaps so they stay out.
Attic Mice Removal →Wildlife tears openings where the roof meets the walls, and every gap is an open door. We seal the entry points and repair the damage.
Rodent Proofing →Thin, patchy insulation lets heated and cooled air escape into the attic all year. Upgrading it cuts energy bills.
Attic Insulation →Moisture in the crawl space feeds mold and rots the framing under your floor. Encapsulation seals out the damp ground air.
Crawl Space Encapsulation →New batts fill every joist bay edge to edge, so heated and cooled air stays in the rooms below instead of bleeding into the attic. Lower bills, even temperatures.
Attic Insulation →A vented ridge lets hot, moist air escape at the peak while baffles keep the soffit intake open. Balanced airflow protects the roof deck and keeps the new insulation dry.
Attic Ventilation →The roofline gap the wildlife used is sealed with rodent-proof mesh and sealant, along with every other opening we found. Nothing gets back in.
Rodent Proofing →Droppings, nesting debris and the contaminated insulation are gone, and the framing is treated so odors and bacteria do not linger in the air you breathe.
Attic Cleanup →A sealed vapor barrier covers the ground and walls, so damp soil air can no longer feed mold or rot the floor framing above it.
Crawl Space Encapsulation →What is going wrong here
- Thin, patchy attic insulation lets heated and cooled air leak up into the attic, and the energy bill pays for every bit of it.
- Warm air pours out through the roofline gap and the ridge instead of staying where it belongs.
- Squirrels, raccoons, bats and mice have moved in; droppings and nesting cover the attic floor.
- Damp ground air rises through the crawl space and feeds mold under the floor.
What changed
- Full-depth insulation keeps conditioned air in the living space where it belongs.
- Warm attic air stays upstairs and vents out at the ridge the way it should.
- Every entry point is sealed and the attic is cleaned and sanitized; nothing lives up there but insulation.
- The crawl space is sealed and dry, so ground moisture stays in the ground.
Built Around Carteret Attics & Crawl Spaces
Carteret grew out of Woodbridge Township in 1906, first as the borough of Roosevelt and then, by 1922, as Carteret, built to house workers at its waterfront steel and metal plants. Those workers' two-family houses and small capes still make up most of the borough, many pushing a century old with attics and crawl spaces rarely touched.
Most Carteret two-families and capes still have whatever insulation went in when they were built between the 1920s and the 1950s, well short of what an attic is expected to carry now.
Carteret's ground sits low against the tidal Arthur Kill and the Rahway River, which is why crawl spaces and older basements stay damp enough to sag insulation out of the joists.
The marshy banks along the Rahway River and the industrial waterfront push rats and mice toward foundations at ground level here, not just toward the roofline.
Winters here still swing below freezing often enough that heat leaking from an underinsulated attic melts roof snow unevenly, building ice dams at the eaves of Carteret's older two-family roofs.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do so many Carteret attics still have their original insulation?
Carteret's two-families and capes were mostly built for the borough's waterfront industrial workforce between the 1920s and the 1950s, before modern insulation codes existed, and few of those houses have had an attic upgrade since. When we open one up here it is almost always the original batts, thin enough that heat pours straight through the ceiling in both directions.
What tips off a Carteret homeowner that rodents are in the attic?
Scratching at dawn and dusk, droppings along the joists, torn insulation gathered into nests, and chewed wiring are the usual signs. In Carteret the entry point is not always the roofline the way it is in most towns, because the marshy ground along the Rahway River and the industrial waterfront also push rats and mice toward foundations at grade.
How long does an attic job take on a typical Carteret two-family?
A straightforward insulation job in one of Carteret's two-family attics usually wraps in a single visit. It takes longer when the old insulation has to come out first or when rodent damage needs cleanup and sanitizing, since attic access in these tightly built houses tends to be narrow. You will get the actual schedule in writing before the crew starts.
What other Middlesex County towns does Master Attic reach from Carteret?
All of Middlesex County, plus the Woodbridge Township sections that surround Carteret on every side, Port Reading, Avenel and Sewaren, along with Linden just across the Rahway River in Union County. Crews also run regularly out to Edison for attic and crawl space work across that stretch of Middlesex County.
How much insulation should a Carteret attic actually have?
Current guidance calls for meaningfully more insulation than most Middlesex County attics ever received, and how much a given attic needs gets sorted out once we take a look during the inspection. Most Carteret attics we inspect, especially in the two-family houses near Chrome and West Carteret, are running well below that because they still have what went in when the house was framed.
Does a Carteret crawl space need encapsulation if the basement next to it stays dry?
Often, yes. Many of Carteret's older two-families split the foundation between a finished basement and an unheated crawl space under a rear addition, and that crawl space is almost always the wetter half, since the borough sits barely thirteen feet above sea level between two tidal waterways. A sealed vapor barrier over the ground keeps that dampness from ever reaching the framing.
Are there rebates for insulation upgrades in Carteret?
Carteret is PSE&G territory, and insulation and air sealing work has often qualified for rebates through the statewide NJ Clean Energy Program. Offerings change from one year to the next, so the most reliable way to know what applies to your project is to ask during your free estimate.
Can sealing the attic stop ice dams on a Carteret roof?
In most cases, yes. Ice dams build when heat escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof while the eaves stay cold enough to refreeze that meltwater, and Carteret's older two-family roofs lose plenty of heat through unsealed top plates and duct chases. Closing those gaps before adding new insulation breaks that cycle for good, insulation alone will not.
