Master Attic did a phenomenal job with our attic insulation and duct replacement. We had a loss from smoke damage from a neighboring fire and we were met with compassion and excellent customer service from Danny Jones and Jorge Diaz. We chose them for their quality of work, expertise and fair pricing and they got the job done promptly. Thank you for the excellent work and we will be recommending you highly!

Clearing Failed Insulation Out of a Carteret Crawl Space
Insulation under a crawl space doesn't announce it has failed, it just quietly stops doing anything useful: a batt slips free of the joist it was stapled to, groundwater works its way up into the fibers, or a mouse tears it apart looking for a place to nest. Carteret's two-family houses and capes, mostly built for the borough's waterfront workforce between the 1920s and the 1950s, carry a lot of original material that has had close to a century to reach that point, and the ground's closeness to the tidal Arthur Kill only pushes the timeline along faster.
Before anything comes out, we confirm what's actually going on down there and whether rodents have played a part, since contaminated material has to be handled differently than insulation that simply gave out from age or moisture. From there it's vacuum extraction wherever the crawl space allows, working carefully around plumbing, support posts and low framing so nothing gets disturbed that doesn't need to be.
With the joists and subfloor exposed, any section that was contaminated gets sanitized, and from there the crawl space is set up for whatever comes next, new insulation, a vapor barrier, sometimes both. Getting the old material out is a complete job by itself, and we lay out what should follow it in the estimate, built around what we actually saw once we were underneath.

Signs a Carteret Crawl Space Needs Removal, Not a Top-Up
What tells us a Carteret crawl space is past saving, not just due for more insulation.
Batts installed during Carteret's two-family building years hold on for a long time, but not forever, and groundwater reaching them speeds the slide. Once material slips or falls away entirely, whole sections of a crawl space are left with nothing overhead at all.
Two tidal waterways bracket Carteret rather than one, and a crawl space in the borough's lower sections takes on groundwater on a fairly regular basis because of it. Insulation sitting in that kind of repeated moisture starts breaking down within a handful of seasons, not decades.
Loose, aging insulation reads as ready-made bedding to a mouse. Once nesting has actually happened, the fibers hold onto droppings and urine permanently, past any point where washing or airing it out would help. Wherever we find this in a Carteret crawl space, sanitizing follows the removal, not an optional add-on.
A good share of what comes out of Carteret crawl spaces dates back to the borough's earliest construction boom, installed with no expectation of lasting this many decades under a house sitting this close to tidal ground. Age by itself is often enough of a reason to replace it.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Crawlspace Insulation Removal in Carteret: Questions We Get
How do I know if a Carteret crawl space needs its insulation removed?
A few tells: batts sagging away from the joists, a musty smell that lingers, dark staining, or the kind of shredded look that means mice have been nesting in it. All of these turn up regularly in the crawl spaces under the borough's older two-family rear additions. A free inspection confirms what's actually going on before we recommend pulling anything.
Roughly how long does a removal job take in Carteret?
That varies with the size of the crawl space, how contaminated the material actually is, and how much clearance it allows under whatever addition it sits beneath. An open, straightforward removal moves quickly; heavy contamination or cramped framing stretches it out. We give you the real figure only after we've seen the crawl space ourselves, spelled out in your written estimate.
Do rebates ever apply to crawl space insulation removal in Carteret?
Occasionally, when the removal is part of a larger project rather than standing alone. PSE&G territory covers Carteret, and a project that clears out failed material before installing new insulation has, at times, been eligible under New Jersey's statewide efficiency incentives. What's actually available shifts, so that's a question we answer directly during your estimate rather than in advance.
Should I try removing crawl space insulation myself in Carteret?
Not once there's clear rodent activity, or the material has been sitting soaked near the tidal water table. Material like that needs proper bagging and disposal, not a garbage bag and a trip to the curb, and a crawl space under a rear addition is a tight, low crawl to be working blind in without the right gear. A free inspection tells you what's actually involved before anyone goes under the house.
What does the removal process actually look like in a Carteret crawl space?
Vacuum equipment handles most of it, drawing the old material out rather than stirring dust and debris across the rest of the crawl space. Everything gets bagged and hauled off under local disposal rules. Where rodents had clearly been living in it, the newly exposed framing gets a sanitizing pass before we'll call the space ready for anything new.
After removal, is there a gap before new insulation gets installed in a Carteret crawl space?
We keep that gap as short as the crawl space allows, since bare joists over tidal ground start pulling in moisture again almost right away. Whether fresh batts, a sealed barrier, or a combination of the two goes back in is a call the inspection makes, based on why the original material gave out in the first place.
What other Middlesex County towns do you handle crawl space removal in from Carteret?
Carteret sits nearly boxed in by Woodbridge Township, which puts Port Reading, Avenel and Sewaren solidly within reach, and crews cross into Linden over the Rahway River and out to Edison from there. Original insulation from the same early-to-mid-century building era is aging out across that whole corner of the county, not only inside Carteret.
Does a crawl space get noticeably colder while it sits stripped down before new insulation goes in?
For that short stretch, yes, somewhat, since bare joists lose heat faster than an insulated crawl space would. That's exactly why we push to schedule removal and reinstallation back to back as one visit when the job allows, instead of leaving open framing sitting there any longer than the work actually calls for.
