Master Attic did a phenomenal job with our attic insulation and duct replacement. We had a loss from smoke damage from a neighboring fire and we were met with compassion and excellent customer service from Danny Jones and Jorge Diaz. We chose them for their quality of work, expertise and fair pricing and they got the job done promptly. Thank you for the excellent work and we will be recommending you highly!

Sealing Out Tidal Moisture in a Carteret Crawl Space
Not much of Carteret rises far above the tide line, roughly thirteen feet at its highest, and with the Arthur Kill on one side and the Rahway River on the other, the ground beneath the borough's older two-family houses almost never gets the chance to dry that it would a few miles inland. Many of those crawl spaces sit inside block or fieldstone foundations built long before anyone worried about keeping ground moisture out, which is precisely what a sealed vapor barrier is meant to stop.
A liner only seals as well as the surface it goes over, so anything sitting on the crawl space floor, old insulation, leftover debris, whatever a previous owner never cleared out, comes out before the barrier does. From there it's mostly detail work: vents shut, every seam taped, and the material carried up the walls and wrapped around each support post so there's no seam left open to the framing above it.
A fair number of Carteret's older two-families picked up their crawl space later, as a rear extension tacked onto a house that already had a finished basement, and that newer, add-on space tends to run damper than the basement it sits next to. Whether a given crawl space needs the full barrier or something less comes down to what the inspection actually finds, not a one-size answer, and that's what shapes the written estimate.

What Drives Encapsulation Calls in Carteret
The tidal water table shapes most of what we find under a Carteret crawl space.
Carteret's elevation tops out around thirteen feet between two tidal waterways, the Arthur Kill and the Rahway River, so the ground under an older crawl space rarely gets a real chance to dry out between storms.
Block and fieldstone crawl space walls on Carteret's older two-family houses were laid decades before sealing a foundation against ground moisture was standard practice, so they let it straight through into the space unless something is sealed over them.
A dirt floor and an open vent near Carteret's industrial waterfront make a damp crawl space an easy shelter for mice and other small animals, especially once the ground outside turns cold, which is one more reason a sealed crawl space matters in this part of town.
Many Carteret crawl spaces sit under a later rear addition rather than the original house, which means less clearance and tighter framing to route the vapor barrier around, something we plan for once we're actually underneath.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Crawl Space Encapsulation in Carteret: Questions We Get
What does crawl space encapsulation actually cover in Carteret?
Everything between the ground and the framing above it. The crawl space gets cleared down to bare framing, the foundation vents are closed, and a heavy barrier goes across the floor and up whatever the walls are here, usually block or fieldstone on the borough's older houses, with every seam taped so moisture and outside air both stay shut out. Support posts and the rim joist get wrapped or sealed right along with it.
How long does encapsulation take in a Carteret crawl space?
How big the space is matters, but prep work matters more. An already-clear crawl space just needs the barrier fitted and sealed, a fairly short job. One holding old insulation, debris or standing water needs that cleared out first, which stretches the timeline before the actual encapsulation even starts. We'll give you the real number for your crawl space once we've been underneath, and it's part of the written estimate.
Does encapsulation work in Carteret qualify for any energy rebates?
Sometimes, though encapsulation on its own is a narrower category than general insulation rebates. PSE&G is the utility serving Carteret, and local offers tend to route through the statewide clean energy program when they exist. Rather than guess at what's live right now, ask us directly at your free estimate and we'll walk you through whatever actually applies to your crawl space.
Are there specific spots in Carteret where crawl spaces flood after storms?
The lower sections nearer the Arthur Kill and the Rahway River hold water longer after a heavy rain than blocks farther from the water, and a crawl space there is more likely to need the full barrier once it's dry. A flooded crawl space needs the standing water pumped out and real time to dry before any barrier goes in, encapsulation takes over from there to manage the ongoing ground moisture, not the flood itself. We look at exactly where a property sits relative to both waterways when we walk the crawl space during the estimate.
How do you decide whether a Carteret crawl space needs full encapsulation?
It comes down to how close the crawl space sits to the tidal water table and what condition the foundation is in. A block or fieldstone wall with a history of dampness usually needs the full barrier, while a drier crawl space farther from the Arthur Kill or the Rahway River may only need new insulation. We check both during the free inspection.
Does insulation already in the crawl space need to be removed before encapsulation goes in?
It depends on its condition. Insulation that has absorbed moisture from a damp block or fieldstone wall, or that shows chew marks from rodents, comes out first, since sealing a vapor barrier over failed material only locks in whatever's already wrong underneath. Dry, intact insulation in a crawl space that has stayed dry can often be left in place.
Which nearby towns does Master Attic encapsulate crawl spaces in from Carteret?
Practically all of it, since Carteret's crews already work the Woodbridge Township sections right next door: Port Reading, Avenel and Sewaren. Cross the Rahway River and Linden is in the same rotation, and Edison rounds out the Middlesex County footprint from there. High water tables and older, unsealed foundations aren't unique to Carteret, so the encapsulation calls we get look much the same across that whole area.
How long does crawl space encapsulation last in a Carteret house, and does it need upkeep?
A liner installed correctly is not on a countdown to failure, it is meant to hold for the long haul on its own. Given how close Carteret sits to two tidal waterways, the honest answer is that a barrier here earns a second look whenever a crew is already under the house for something else, checking the seams and the vent covers for anything the ground moisture may have worked loose.
