How We Remove Raccoons in Somerset
A raccoon denning in a Somerset attic or crawl space almost always found a specific weak spot: a torn soffit or gap at the roofline above, or a broken foundation vent or loose crawl door below. Before anything else, our first task is locating that opening and figuring out if we are dealing with a single animal or a mother raising young there, since that changes the whole plan for how the removal gets handled.
A one-way door set directly over the opening is the usual approach for the attic, letting the raccoon head out to feed on its own schedule while blocking any way back in once it has left. Below, at the crawl space vent, skirting, or access door, the same principle applies, though a young litter still in the den, or an entry point that keeps shifting, can push us toward humane trapping instead.
Once we have confirmed the raccoon is gone for good, that opening gets closed up right away so nothing else can follow the same path in. Cleanup follows: torn insulation, droppings, and any chewed ductwork or wiring in the attic, or a soiled vapor barrier and flattened insulation in the crawl space. The written estimate spells out exclusion, cleanup, and sanitizing for whichever space on your Somerset property the animal had been using.

What We Find on Somerset Raccoon Calls
These conditions come up repeatedly on raccoon calls across Somerset attics and crawl spaces.
Aging soffit trim on Somerset's 1960s and 70s split-levels tends to loosen well before it does on anything built in the last two decades, and once that gap gets wide enough, a raccoon can pry it open into a hole large enough to climb through and settle in, especially as the weather cools in fall.
The same animal working an attic roofline will just as readily test a loose foundation vent, a gap beneath a crawl access panel, or torn skirting near ground level, and Somerset's mix of crawl spaces and basements gives a raccoon more than one route in depending on how the house was built.
Once inside, a raccoon flattens and tears whatever insulation is nearest into a bed, whether that is attic batts near Quailbrook or the material along a crawl space rim joist, and that damage is usually the first thing we see once the entry point is found.
Somerset's winters swing hard enough between mild stretches and sudden cold that raccoons looking for reliable shelter treat an accessible attic or crawl space as a better bet than a hollow tree, which is part of why calls tend to pick up as the weather turns.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Raccoon Removal in Somerset: Questions We Get
What actually happens on a raccoon removal visit in Somerset?
We look for how the raccoon is getting in, checking the roofline and soffit above and any foundation vent or crawl door below, and figure out whether one animal or a mother with young is involved. From there we usually install a one-way door over the opening so the raccoon leaves on its own and cannot return, and switch to humane trapping for the cases a one-way door simply cannot handle.
What kind of schedule should I expect for raccoon removal in Somerset?
It leans on the raccoon's own habits as much as our own. A one-way door might clear the attic in a few nights, or take longer if the animal is not leaving on a predictable pattern, particularly with young still in the den. Your written estimate lays out the approach and expected timing for your specific Somerset attic or crawl space.
Does raccoon removal in Somerset ever qualify for a utility rebate?
The removal work itself is outside what PSE&G or the state Clean Energy Program funds, but insulation replacement afterward can sometimes fall under current program offerings. Once we know how much insulation the raccoon damaged in your attic or crawl space, we can flag what applies during your free estimate.
Is the process different for a raccoon in a Somerset attic versus one in a crawl space?
The access point changes, roofline or soffit for an attic, a vent, skirting, or door near ground level for a crawl space, but the method stays consistent: locate the opening, remove the animal humanely, seal the gap, and clean up what it left. When there is any doubt about which space is in use, we check both on a Somerset property before quoting anything.
Why would you trap a raccoon instead of just installing a one-way door?
A one-way door works best when the raccoon is already coming and going on a pattern, since it lets the animal exit under its own timing without being handled directly. We turn to trapping when the entry point is not consistent, when young are present and need to be reunited with the mother, or when the specific situation calls for a more hands-on approach.
Do you clean up and repair the damage after a raccoon leaves?
Yes, cleanup rides along with the same job rather than becoming a separate call. Once the raccoon is confirmed out and the entry point is sealed, we remove torn or soiled insulation, sanitize the attic or crawl space, and can quote new insulation or crawl space work on the spot, so nothing gets left half finished.
What towns near Somerset does Master Attic handle raccoon removal in?
Somerville and Bound Brook fill out the rest of Somerset County, and the crew regularly crosses into Middlesex County for New Brunswick, North Brunswick, and Franklin Park too. Raccoons follow the same river corridors through all of these towns, so our crews already recognize the access points to check.
Is it actually risky to have a raccoon living in a Somerset attic?
Enough that it is worth taking seriously. A cornered raccoon or one guarding young can act defensively, and raccoons can carry diseases that make direct contact something to avoid entirely. That is why trained technicians handle removal rather than a homeowner attempting it. Getting the raccoon out and the opening permanently closed is what actually takes that risk off the table.
