How We Remove Raccoons in Somerville
A raccoon does not get into a Somerville attic or crawl space through the whole house, just one specific weak point, so locating that comes first: up top it is usually a torn soffit or a gap where an old cornice meets the roofline, and underneath it tends to be a foundation vent with a broken screen, a crawl door hanging slightly ajar, or a stretch of skirting that has pulled away from the foundation.
With the entry point confirmed, removal follows humane methods: a one-way door fitted over the opening is the default, letting the raccoons leave under their own power without a way back in. Trapping comes into play instead when young raccoons are too small to follow their mother out on their own, since a one-way door only works once the whole family can use it.
Sealing the opening comes right after the raccoons are gone, so nothing else moves in behind them, and the space itself gets the same attention: soiled insulation and droppings in an attic get cleaned and sanitized before new material goes down, while a crawl space is checked for comparable damage along the joists and vapor barrier, stone cellar downtown or newer vented crawl space on the east side alike.

Where Raccoons Get Into Somerville Attics and Crawl Spaces
How raccoons most often get into a Somerville attic or crawl space.
The ornate cornices and open soffits on Somerville's Victorians and foursquares near Main Street give a climbing raccoon an easy foothold, and once the wood there has weathered for a century the gaps are often wide enough to climb straight through.
More houses on the east side rest over a vented crawl space instead of a cellar, and a cracked foundation vent screen or a crawl door left ajar there offers a raccoon just as direct a route in underneath as the roofline does from above.
A raccoon denning in an attic or crawl space tears at ductwork, chews wiring and insulation and leaves droppings and urine behind, and the longer it stays the more of that damage builds up before anyone notices the noise overhead or underfoot.
Whatever insulation is closest to where a raccoon settles, attic batts or crawl space liner alike, usually ends up soiled and matted, and it has to be cleaned out and sanitized before new material goes back in, in either space.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Raccoon Removal in Somerville: Questions We Get
How do you get raccoons out of a Somerville attic or crawl space?
Humane removal, most often a one-way door fitted over the entry point that lets the raccoon leave on its own but not climb back in. Where there are young raccoons too small to follow their mother out, trapping is used instead so the whole family can be handled and removed together rather than separated. Which method fits depends on what the inspection finds.
Does raccoon removal in Somerville take a while, or is it usually quick?
Mostly it comes down to whether there are young raccoons in the mix. An adult raccoon working alone and leaving through a one-way door tends to be the fastest scenario, while a mother with a litter takes longer since the whole family has to be accounted for. The schedule gets confirmed in writing only once the situation has actually been seen.
Can PSE&G or NJ incentives help with raccoon damage cleanup in Somerville?
Raccoon removal and sealing the entry point are not usually the part those programs pay toward, though insulation replaced after raccoon damage has, in some years, qualified for state or PSE&G efficiency incentives available to customers in this territory, Somerville included. The estimator can confirm what is currently available for a specific job.
Are raccoons in a Somerville crawl space as dangerous as ones in the attic?
The risk is similar either way. A raccoon can be aggressive if it feels cornered and may carry disease, so the safest approach in a crawl space or an attic is the same: keep your distance and let the removal be handled by someone trained to do it, rather than trying to corner or move the animal yourself.
What roofline or foundation clues point to a raccoon problem in a Somerville attic or crawl space?
Above, it is torn or gapped wood at the soffits and roofline; below, it is damaged foundation vents, crawl doors and skirting showing the same kind of wear. Somerville's older Victorians and foursquares tend to show the roofline damage first, while newer construction on the east side more often turns up trouble at the crawl space vents instead.
After raccoons are removed from a Somerville attic or crawl space, does the opening get sealed too?
Always, and it happens as one continuous job rather than a follow-up visit. An open roofline gap or foundation vent just invites the next raccoon or squirrel, so sealing it waits only until the current occupants are confirmed clear, whether that means closing a soffit tear above or replacing a vent screen below.
What other Somerset County towns do you handle raccoon removal in?
Raccoons do not respect the Somerville border, so neither does the coverage. Hillsborough, Manville and Bound Brook are handled the same as Bridgewater Township and Raritan Borough right next door, and so is the Somerset corner of Franklin Township further east. Wherever the call comes from in the county, an attic or crawl space gets the same response.
If one raccoon is removed from a Somerville attic, will another just move in later?
It can happen, if the opening that let the first one in is not properly closed. That is exactly why sealing the entry point, a soffit gap upstairs or a foundation vent below, is treated as part of the job itself rather than something to think about afterward. A properly closed opening is what actually keeps the next raccoon out.
