How We Install New Crawlspace Insulation in Somerset
New crawlspace insulation in Somerset means fitting insulation between the floor joists themselves, the layer that keeps the living space above a vented crawl space from feeling the cold and damp coming up from the ground. Whether a given Franklin Township block got a basement or a crawl space came down to when it was built, and it is the crawl space side of town that tends to be running on the thinnest, oldest material. Where the original insulation has fallen from the joists entirely, which shows up often in older sections near Quailbrook, the floor above stays cold regardless of anything else that has been sealed up.
Sealing starts at the band where the foundation wall meets the joists, since a gap there lets outside air straight past whatever insulation goes in afterward. From there insulation is fit between the joists, cut and fastened to actually stay in place rather than sag with the first humid summer, and any vapor barrier the crawl space needs goes down at the same stage.
How that job actually plays out comes down to what condition the joists and any existing material are in, something a phone call cannot tell us. So a technician walks the crawl space first, and only then does a number, free and written, land on paper with everything that inspection turned up.

What Turns Up in Somerset Crawl Spaces
The four conditions we run into most when we install new crawl space insulation in Somerset.
In plenty of Franklin Township's older sections, the batt insulation installed when the crawl space was built has come loose from the joists entirely and is sitting on the ground instead of holding heat where it belongs. Fitting new material starts with clearing what is left of the old.
That narrow strip of framing along the top of a Somerset foundation is rarely insulated to the same standard as the rest of the crawl space, and it accounts for a surprising share of a cold floor upstairs. New insulation that skips it leaves the leak sitting right there.
Franklin Township's Somerset section occupies low ground between the Millstone and the Raritan, so moisture reaches most crawl spaces here sooner or later. Insulation that is not fit tightly against the joists gives that moisture room to settle in and sag it over time.
Somerset callers describing a floor that never warms up, no matter where the thermostat is set, are describing one of our most familiar complaints, and the culprit is nearly always thin or missing insulation right below, in the crawl space nobody thinks to check first.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
New Crawlspace Insulation in Somerset: Questions We Get
What does new crawl space insulation actually involve in Somerset?
It starts with sealing the band at the top of the foundation where the wall meets the joists, since a gap there lets outside air past whatever goes in afterward. Insulation is then cut and fit into each joist bay along the crawl space ceiling and fastened so it holds its position instead of sagging with the first humid month, and a vapor barrier goes down separately where the crawl space needs one.
What is a realistic timeline for a new crawl space insulation install?
A straightforward install over a crawl space that is already clear moves quickly. Pulling old material out first, or sealing an extensively gapped rim joist band, adds real time to the job. However long yours runs, that number gets set once we have actually seen the space, not guessed at beforehand, and it goes into the written estimate.
Is a new crawl space install the kind of project PSE&G rebates cover?
It has, historically. Crawl space insulation sits in the same rebate category as attic insulation and air sealing, both of which the utility and the state have funded through past efficiency cycles. Exactly what a given cycle covers is not something we quote from memory though, so we confirm the live details with you at the time of the estimate.
Does new insulation down there actually change how the floor above feels?
Yes, when it is fit correctly against the joists rather than laid loosely across them. The floor above a crawl space picks up cold and damp directly from what is underneath it, and closing that gap with properly fitted insulation is usually one of the more noticeable changes a Somerset property owner feels after the work is done.
What determines which insulation gets used in a given crawl space?
It comes down to how the joists are spaced and what is already up there. Most Somerset crawl spaces we open take batt insulation cut to the joist bay, but access, moisture and what condition the existing material is in all factor into the specific recommendation, which is why we measure the actual space before quoting anything.
Does the old insulation have to be removed first?
Only where the material has actually failed. Dry insulation that is still holding its position can sometimes stay in place while new material fills the gaps around it. Where it has fallen, gotten wet or shows signs of rodents, which is common in Somerset's older sections, it comes out first, because new insulation fit around failing material fails with it.
Which towns near Somerset do you install crawl space insulation in?
Every town in Somerset County is within reach, Somerville and Bound Brook included, and crossing the Raritan into Middlesex County does not slow anything down: North Brunswick, New Brunswick and Franklin Park are all part of the regular route.
Can the liner and the insulation go in during one appointment?
Sometimes, depending on what the crawl space needs. A vapor barrier addresses ground moisture and is its own scope of work, while new insulation addresses heat loss through the floor. The barrier is not an automatic first step, where the ground is genuinely damp we usually put it in before the insulation, and where the crawl space is already dry the insulation can go in on its own. The inspection is what decides, and many Somerset crawl spaces end up needing both, quoted together as one job.
