Master Attic did a phenomenal job with our attic insulation and duct replacement. We had a loss from smoke damage from a neighboring fire and we were met with compassion and excellent customer service from Danny Jones and Jorge Diaz. We chose them for their quality of work, expertise and fair pricing and they got the job done promptly. Thank you for the excellent work and we will be recommending you highly!

How We Install New Crawlspace Insulation in Somerville
New crawlspace insulation in Somerville almost always starts with sealing before it starts with batts. Warm floor-level air escaping into an open, vented crawl space is common in the ranches and Cape Cods built decades later on the east side of town, and no amount of new insulation holds up if that air keeps moving through gaps at the rim joist and the floor framing above it.
Master Attic typically installs batt insulation between the floor joists for Somerville crawl spaces, sized to the joist bay and held in place against the subfloor above. Proximity to Peters Brook or the Raritan tends to bring moisture problems along with it, and when that is the case a vapor barrier over the ground gets added to the same job, since new insulation laid over damp ground fails just as fast as the material it replaced.
Whether the recommendation ends up being batts alone, batts with a sealed liner underneath, or the full rim joist and floor package, comes out of walking the specific space: how it was originally built, how much moisture shows up, and what shape the framing is actually in. A written quote at no cost lays out exactly what got recommended and the reasoning behind it.

What New Insulation Has to Work Around in Somerville
These are the four situations that shape most new crawlspace insulation quotes here.
Many of the ranches and Cape Cods on Somerville's east side were framed with open, vented crawl spaces from the start, insulated to whatever standard was common decades ago, if insulated at all. Getting one up to today's guidance usually means starting fresh at the floor joists rather than adding a little on top of what is already there.
Peters Brook and the Raritan River both keep the water table close to the surface across Somerville, and a crawl space without a vapor barrier lets that moisture climb right up into new insulation almost as fast as it did the old material.
The stone-foundation cellars under Main and Division Street Victorians predate modern insulation standards entirely, with framing and clearances that were never designed around a batt system. New insulation in these spaces usually has to be fitted around obstacles a newer crawl space would not have.
Bedroom and living room floors that never quite warm up once a Somerset County cold snap sets in are usually the tip-off that whatever is below them is not doing its job, either it was never insulated properly to start with or it has since broken down.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
New Crawlspace Insulation in Somerville: Questions We Get
What material actually goes into a newly insulated Somerville crawl space?
Batt insulation fitted between the floor joists is the standard choice for most Somerville crawl spaces, sized to the joist bay so it stays put against the subfloor. A vapor barrier joins it only when the ground moisture calls for one, a judgment the walk-through makes rather than a rule applied to every job.
Does the old crawl space insulation need to come out first?
Material that is still dry and free of rodent damage can sometimes stay put and simply be added to. Anything that has taken on moisture from Peters Brook or the Raritan, or shows signs of nesting, comes out before new batts go down, because building on top of failed insulation just hides the underlying problem for a while longer.
Are there any utility incentives worth checking on before insulating a Somerville crawl space?
New insulation is closer to what utility incentive programs are typically built around than most of our other services, and Somerville sits inside PSE&G's coverage area. What is currently available is worth confirming at the estimate visit rather than assumed ahead of time.
Will new crawlspace insulation help with cold floors upstairs in a Somerville house?
In most cases, yes. A living room or bedroom floor that will not warm up is one of the clearest signs of an unfinished crawl space below it, and new insulation paired with sealing the foundation-level framing is usually what fixes it. How noticeable the change ends up being comes down to what else is going on down there, which the inspection is what actually accounts for.
How do you decide what a Somerville crawl space actually needs?
Current construction, whether it is vented or already sealed, how much ground moisture shows up near Peters Brook or the Raritan, and the state of whatever insulation is already in there, all get factored in on the walk-through. A downtown stone cellar rarely needs the same fix as an east side ranch, which is exactly why nothing gets quoted sight unseen.
What determines how long a Somerville crawl space insulation job runs?
Timing here comes down to whether removal or a vapor barrier is also part of the job, on top of the size of the space itself. A straightforward install over a clean, dry crawl space moves quickly, while one that needs old material removed first or extra rim joist work takes longer. That specific timeframe gets written into the estimate once the crawl space has been inspected.
Beyond Somerville, where else in Somerset County do you install crawl space insulation?
Regularly in Hillsborough Township, Bridgewater Township and Raritan Borough, as well as Manville, Bound Brook and the Somerset stretch of Franklin Township, most of it the same kind of vented, aging crawl space Somerville has. The mix of older stone cellars and newer builds across that stretch of Central Jersey is familiar territory for the crew by now.
Can new crawlspace insulation go in without disturbing anything upstairs in a Somerville house?
Yes. The work happens entirely in the crawl space itself, through the existing access point, so there is no need to move furniture or open up flooring from above. Somerville's older stone cellars sometimes have tighter access than a newer crawl space, and the crew stages the job accordingly.
