Master Attic did a phenomenal job with our attic insulation and duct replacement. We had a loss from smoke damage from a neighboring fire and we were met with compassion and excellent customer service from Danny Jones and Jorge Diaz. We chose them for their quality of work, expertise and fair pricing and they got the job done promptly. Thank you for the excellent work and we will be recommending you highly!

How We Encapsulate a Crawl Space in Somerville
Crawl space encapsulation in Somerville starts with sealing off the ground itself, not just wrapping insulation around the joists. Peters Brook cuts through the borough and the Raritan River runs along its southern edge, so the water table under downtown and the east side stays high most of the year, and both older stone-foundation cellars and newer vented crawl spaces pull that dampness in through the ground and the vents. A heavy-duty liner run up the walls and pinned across the ground is what finally keeps that moisture out of the framing.
Somerville has flooded before, most notably during Hurricane Floyd in 1999, which is worth mentioning only to draw a clear line: Master Attic handles the slow, everyday humidity a river-valley crawl space deals with all year, not storm cleanup or pumping out standing water. A space has to already be dry before an encapsulation goes in, and from that point on the sealed liner keeps ordinary ground moisture from doing the same gradual damage a flood does all at once, downtown Victorian or east side Cape Cod alike.
The inspection is what decides how a specific crawl space gets sealed: how much ground coverage is needed, whether closing off the foundation vents is part of the scope, and whether the existing insulation has already taken on enough moisture that it needs pulling first. All of that gets written up at no charge, naming what turned up during the walk-through and what the finished system will include.

What We Find in Somerville Crawl Spaces
The four conditions ground moisture creates most often in Somerville, NJ.
Both waterways sit close enough to downtown and the east side that the water table under Somerville rarely drops far, and a crawl space without a sealed barrier pulls that dampness in through the vents and the exposed ground below it year round.
Downtown, the Victorians on and around Main and Division predate vapor barriers by close to a century, so decades of ground moisture have simply settled into the framing above their stone foundations, softening wood that would otherwise still be sound.
Head toward the hospital campus and the crawl spaces get younger but no drier: those east side Cape Cods and ranches were vented to the outside by original design, and outside air in this part of New Jersey carries enough moisture on its own to keep the space damp nearly year round.
Batts that were installed decades ago in a Somerville crawl space eventually take on enough ground moisture to pull loose from the joists overhead, leaving the floor above cold and the framing exposed to the same dampness that caused it.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Crawl Space Encapsulation in Somerville: Questions We Get
How does Peters Brook and the Raritan River affect crawl space encapsulation in Somerville?
Both keep the water table under Somerville high for most of the year, so vented crawl spaces and older stone cellars alike pull in more ground moisture than a house farther from either waterway. Sealing the floor and walls with a full vapor barrier keeps that moisture from ever reaching the framing, insulation and anything stored down there.
What actually decides how long an encapsulation job runs in Somerville?
Two things mostly set the pace: how big the crawl space is, and whether old insulation or debris has to be cleared first. A clean, dry crawl space gets sealed fast. One that needs a cleanup or insulation removal ahead of the liner going down naturally runs longer. The actual duration is confirmed once someone has physically been in the space, and it goes into the quote from there.
Does New Jersey's Clean Energy Program pay for encapsulation in Somerville?
Encapsulation on its own sits outside what PSE&G and the state program are built to fund, since their focus stays on insulation and air sealing. Where new insulation goes in alongside the vapor barrier, that piece can sometimes qualify, and the estimate visit is when we would check what is currently on offer for a Somerville address.
Which other Somerset County towns do you handle crawl space encapsulation in?
The same encapsulation work covers the rest of Somerset County: Raritan Borough and Bridgewater Township border Somerville directly, Hillsborough Township sits just south, and Bound Brook, Manville and the Somerset piece of Franklin Township all deal with similar ground moisture.
What goes into deciding how a specific Somerville crawl space gets encapsulated?
A walk-through covers how much ground moisture is present, whether the existing insulation has already absorbed it, the condition of the foundation vents, and whether debris needs clearing out before anything else happens. A downtown stone cellar and an east side vented crawl space rarely need the exact same treatment, which is the reason each one gets inspected on its own rather than quoted sight unseen.
Is pulling the old insulation always part of an encapsulation job?
Dry material in decent shape can sometimes just stay put. Anything that has been sitting near Peters Brook or the Raritan long enough to soak through is a different story: sealing a vapor liner over already-wet insulation only traps that moisture in place instead of solving it, so it gets pulled first.
Given Somerville's flood history near Peters Brook, is encapsulation still worth it?
For the ordinary, year-round dampness a river-valley crawl space deals with, yes, worth it. What Master Attic does not do is storm cleanup: pumping out a flooded crawl space and drying it out is a separate job that has to happen first, on its own, before any liner goes in. Once a space is dry, the sealed barrier is what keeps the slower kind of moisture from causing the same damage a flood does all at once, so it is worth a look after any high-water event.
How durable is the vapor barrier once a Somerville crawl space is fully encapsulated?
Durable enough to be a one-time job in most cases, provided the ground and walls were wrapped and sealed the right way to begin with. We stop short of naming a specific year count, since that depends on whether anything in the crawl space disturbs the liner later on. A future visit to the same Somerville property is a natural time to check it.
