Master Attic did a phenomenal job with our attic insulation and duct replacement. We had a loss from smoke damage from a neighboring fire and we were met with compassion and excellent customer service from Danny Jones and Jorge Diaz. We chose them for their quality of work, expertise and fair pricing and they got the job done promptly. Thank you for the excellent work and we will be recommending you highly!

How We Clean Up a Crawl Space or Basement in Somerville
What a crawlspace and basement cleanup actually looks like shifts depending on which part of Somerville the house is in. Downtown usually means an older stone-foundation cellar carrying decades of accumulated debris, musty odors and sometimes rodent activity, all made worse by how close Peters Brook and the Raritan River sit. East of downtown it more often means a vented crawl space where old insulation, dust and animal contamination have been piling up quietly for years instead.
Master Attic removes what does not belong: loose debris, failed insulation, droppings and nesting material, and anything else that has settled into the space over time. The area gets sanitized once it is cleared, addressing the health concerns that debris and contamination create rather than just the appearance of the space.
What a cleanup uncovers often decides what happens next: whether the crawl space needs new insulation or a vapor barrier, whether an entry point needs sealing against wildlife, or whether the space is otherwise in good shape once it is clean. That recommendation comes free and in writing, listing what was found and what we suggest doing about it.
What Crawlspace & Basement Cleanup in Somerville Includes
Six related steps that usually come up once a Somerville crawl space or cellar gets cleared out, all quoted together on one walk-through.
What We Find in Somerville Crawl Spaces & Basements
Most Somerville cleanup calls trace back to one of these four situations.
Cellars under the Victorians and foursquares near Main and Division often go a decade or more between real cleanouts, and in that stretch of time debris, old insulation scraps and general clutter pile up in a space nobody thinks to check.
Once a rodent or something larger has been living in a Somerville crawl space or cellar, it usually leaves torn insulation, nesting material and an odor behind, on top of the droppings themselves, all of which needs to be cleared and sanitized rather than just swept aside.
Being this close to both Peters Brook and the Raritan keeps the ground damp under downtown and the east side alike for most of the year, and that dampness is usually what homeowners notice first as a musty smell, well before any debris is visible.
A tight crawl space under an older Somerville house takes longer to clear than a walk-in basement, and the crew stages the work differently depending on which one it is, though the same standard of cleanup applies either way.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Crawlspace & Basement Cleanup in Somerville: Questions We Get
What does Master Attic actually do during a Somerville crawlspace or basement cleanup?
Debris, failed insulation and anything wildlife left behind gets pulled first, and sanitizing follows once the space is stripped down to bare framing. In the older stone-foundation cellars downtown that step usually clears years of accumulated buildup, while an east side crawl space more often turns up old insulation and years of dust instead.
How much time does a Somerville crawlspace or basement cleanup usually take?
Volume of buildup and tightness of access are the two biggest variables. A downtown stone cellar carrying years of accumulation generally runs longer than a smaller, more recently built crawl space on the east side. The estimate spells out the actual timeframe once the space has been walked through, not before.
Is a crawl space or basement cleanup covered by any utility program in Somerville?
A cleanup on its own generally is not, since incentive programs are aimed at insulation and air sealing rather than debris removal. If new insulation follows the cleanup, that part has a better chance of qualifying, and PSE&G's Somerville service area is worth mentioning when we come out to quote it.
Is a musty smell in my Somerville basement or crawl space always a sign I need a cleanup?
Not necessarily on its own, but it is worth having looked at. A musty odor usually points to ground moisture, and depending on how long it has been building, it can mean anything from a simple cleanup to insulation that has already failed underneath it. Sorting out which one it is takes an actual walk-through, not a guess over the phone.
How do you tell what has to go versus what can be left alone?
A walk-through sorts what is simply old but harmless from what is a real problem: contaminated insulation, active moisture, signs of wildlife, versus clutter that is fine to leave in place. What actually gets pulled and sanitized comes down to the condition of that specific crawl space or cellar rather than a fixed checklist.
Is a cleanup something you do first, ahead of insulation or a sealed liner?
Generally, yes. Installing anything over debris or contamination just papers over what is underneath rather than fixing it. Getting the framing down to bare, workable condition is the reason a cleanup normally opens the job instead of being tacked on once other work is already done.
Which other towns in Somerset County call you for this kind of cleanup?
Cleanup calls come from across Somerset County as a whole: Raritan Borough, Hillsborough Township and Bridgewater Township as much as Somerville itself, plus Manville, Bound Brook and the Somerset end of Franklin Township, in both older cellars and newer crawl spaces alike.
Will a cleanup fix a rodent problem in my Somerville crawl space for good?
The cleanup itself clears out what is already there, droppings, nesting material, contaminated insulation, but it does not close the opening a rodent used to get in. Pairing the cleanup with rodent proofing is what keeps the same problem from starting over once the space is clean.
