Master Attic did a phenomenal job with our attic insulation and duct replacement. We had a loss from smoke damage from a neighboring fire and we were met with compassion and excellent customer service from Danny Jones and Jorge Diaz. We chose them for their quality of work, expertise and fair pricing and they got the job done promptly. Thank you for the excellent work and we will be recommending you highly!

How We Remove Old Crawlspace Insulation in Somerville
Crawlspace insulation removal in Somerville usually starts for one of two reasons: proximity to Peters Brook or the Raritan River has left the material waterlogged, or something has been nesting in it. Either way, insulation that has broken down or gone contaminated stops doing its job, and covering it over instead of pulling it just wastes the cost of whatever goes on top.
Master Attic uses vacuum equipment to pull the old material out of the joist bays, keeping the mess contained rather than scattering it around the rest of the crawl space, then disposes of it properly. Access in the older stone-foundation cellars downtown tends to be tighter than under a newer east side build, so the setup and staging look different from job to job even though the actual removal does not.
Once the old insulation is out, the crawl space gets a close look: whether the joists themselves show any damage, whether a vapor barrier should go down before new insulation, and what that new insulation should be. Every bit of that goes into a written quote at no charge, worked out before any of the removal itself begins.
What Comes With Crawlspace Insulation Removal in Somerville
Removing old crawl space insulation in Somerville tends to open the door to five other jobs, priced together in one written quote.
What Comes Out of Somerville Crawl Spaces
The four conditions that most often send crawlspace insulation to the dumpster in Somerville, NJ.
With Somerville's water table held high by two nearby waterways, insulation sitting against that kind of ground moisture year after year compresses, mildews and loses whatever value it had well before it would have failed somewhere drier.
Small wildlife rarely need much of an opening around the foundation to get to the same batts meant to keep the floor above warm. Once something has moved in, the insulation underneath it is contaminated and has to come out along with whatever built the nest.
In the downtown Victorians, insulation added to a stone-foundation cellar decades ago is often still in place, well past whatever useful life it had, simply because the space is rarely visited and nobody has looked closely at it.
A crawl space under an older Somerville house often has less clearance than one under a newer build on the east side, which changes how the vacuum hoses and containment get set up more than it changes what actually needs to come out.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Crawlspace Insulation Removal in Somerville: Questions We Get
What are the signs that crawlspace insulation needs to come out in Somerville?
Sagging away from the joists, visible dampness, a moldy or musty smell, and any obvious animal activity are the usual red flags. With Peters Brook and the Raritan both running close to town, ground moisture is behind more of these calls here than it would be in a crawl space farther from either waterway.
For a Somerville job, what usually determines the removal timeline?
Two things mostly decide it: the volume of material coming out, and how tight the access into the space is. Older stone-foundation cellars downtown tend to run slower than a newer east side crawl space with easier access. Once we have seen the space, the actual duration lands in the written estimate before the crew is ever booked.
Will removing old crawl space insulation qualify for a utility rebate?
The removal step by itself generally does not, since incentive programs are built to fund new material and air sealing rather than hauling old material away. What goes in afterward is where PSE&G and state incentives usually apply for a Somerville property, and that is worth raising when we are out for the estimate.
What becomes of the material once it is pulled from a Somerville crawl space?
It is bagged where it comes out and hauled away for proper disposal, never left piled outside. Material carrying rot or contamination, common near Peters Brook or the Raritan, gets handled with the same care and kept apart from the rest of the job so none of it drifts into a section that is already clean.
Once you are in there, how do you tell what actually needs pulling versus what can stay?
Each section of insulation gets judged on its own rather than assuming the whole crawl space is a loss. Anything dry enough to have held its shape usually gets left alone, and it is the wet or wildlife-contaminated sections that come out. That walk-through happens before a number gets written down, so the estimate matches the real crawl space and not a guess.
Does new insulation go in right away after the old material comes out?
Often it does, once the crew is already there. If the crawl space also needs a vapor barrier or a cleanup first, those steps happen before the new insulation goes down, since installing it over unresolved moisture or debris just shortens its life. What order makes sense for a specific crawl space comes out of the inspection.
What other Somerset County towns do you remove crawl space insulation in?
Somerset County coverage extends well past Somerville, into Bridgewater Township, Hillsborough Township and Raritan Borough, and out to Bound Brook, Manville and the Somerset corner of Franklin Township, where the same Peters Brook and Raritan River moisture breaks down crawl space insulation the same way.
Can insulation removal happen without damaging the floor above a Somerville crawl space?
Yes. Everything happens from below, working through the crawl space's own entry rather than cutting into flooring or drywall from the living space above. With the old material cleared away, a look at the joists and subfloor follows, mainly to catch any damage the insulation had been masking.
