An exclusion job in Ridgewood starts on the roof edge: a soffit panel that has worked loose, a ridge cap pulled up by wind, a slipped slate at a valley, a foundation vent screen gone to rust. Every one of those is a possible way in, and on the older rooflines that make up a large share of the Heights, Floral Park and Willard, decades of weather have widened more of them than most homeowners realize.
On the ground side, most Ridgewood properties keep their crawl space small, tucked under a sunporch or mudroom built onto the original house rather than under the main block. That framing rarely got the same care as the foundation walls it sits beside, so the vents, the access door and the skirting around it need the same inspection the roofline gets, and often turn up the opening that started the whole problem.
Whatever has already settled in comes out humanely, and any insulation it nested in or soiled is pulled and the space sanitized before new material goes back. We close the openings first and clean up second, because reversing that order just leaves the door propped for the next animal.

Fascia boards, soffit panels and ridge flashing on Ridgewood's older housing stock were built for an era before anyone worried about a quarter-inch gap, and enough small openings like that have opened up over the decades to give almost any animal a route in somewhere.
Mature canopy over blocks like Old Country Club and the Heights means a raccoon or squirrel barely has to leave the branches to land on a roof edge, and that proximity is a big reason those neighborhoods show up so often on our call list.
A Ridgewood crawl space set beneath a sunporch or mudroom addition holds onto dampness the main house was never built to manage, and a rusted vent screen or a rotted piece of skirting in that damp air becomes an easy point of entry as well as a leak.
A gap patched with loose foam or a scrap of wire mesh tends to fail again within a year or two. We size each opening properly and close it with material meant to stay put, on the roof above and around the crawl space below.

Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. Movement overhead after dark, a sharp smell that was not there before, and small dark pellets scattered near the access hatch are the usual first clues. A thin, high squeak coming from behind the eaves rather than the open attic floor more often points to bats. Any of those is worth a look before whatever material is up there gets damaged further.
After. Sealing a gap while something is still living behind it just traps the animal in the attic or crawl space, which makes things worse, not better. We confirm the space is empty, then close the opening with material sized to hold and replace any insulation that was damaged.
Those programs are not usually built around exclusion work itself, though insulation that has to be replaced after an infestation sometimes qualifies under the statewide NJ Clean Energy Program. Ridgewood is PSE&G territory for the utility side of things, a separate matter from the state program itself. We will tell you plainly what currently fits when we inspect the space.
That is the part of a Ridgewood property it targets best. A sunporch or mudroom crawl space is almost always the loosest-built section of the house, and sealing its vents, its access door and its skirting shuts the gap without any work on the original foundation nearby.
The roof edge accounts for most of it. Fascia, soffit and flashing on the town's older blocks have had decades to shift and gap, giving squirrels, raccoons and bats a route through. On the ground, a foundation vent or a loose skirting panel around a sunporch addition is the equivalent weak point.
It hinges on how many openings there are and how the roofline is built. One soffit gap on a plain roof edge closes in short order, while a house with several roof pitches or a crawl space with multiple vents takes more time to seal properly. Exactly how long yours runs gets settled once we have walked the property and put it in writing.
