Removing Old Attic Insulation in Ridgewood
There are really two paths that lead to an attic insulation removal call in Ridgewood: the material has simply been up there since the house was framed, doing whatever thin job the original builder's standard allowed, or something happened to it since, water, mold, or a squirrel, raccoon or bat working through a century-old soffit or ridge gap. Either way, layering new insulation over the problem just hides it rather than fixing anything.
What comes out gets pulled with vacuum equipment and bagged for removal rather than dumped loose through the house on the way down, a distinction that matters most in a third-floor kneewall attic where the crew is already maneuvering through tight, angled framing. Where knob-and-tube wiring is still running underneath, not unusual in Ridgewood's oldest sections, it gets flagged and worked around instead of buried again under whatever goes back up.
Once the attic floor is clear, it gets cleaned and sanitized, gaps at the top plates and chases get sealed, and only then does new insulation go back in. The estimate covering that whole sequence is free and written, laying out what came out, what condition it was in and what we recommend putting back, judged attic by attic rather than off a general rule.

What We Find When We Remove Ridgewood Attic Insulation
Four situations that most often bring a Ridgewood attic in for insulation removal.
Plenty of attics in Ridgewood's older stock, Upper Ridgewood and Brookside included, still hold nothing more than the material the house was framed with, compacted flat and doing little real insulating after a century of settling underfoot.
A squirrel or raccoon that squeezes through a worn soffit joint or ridge gap on an older Ridgewood roofline usually beds down in the insulation right at that opening, and once droppings or a nest are involved, that section gets pulled rather than left in place.
A slow leak at a valley or chimney flashing can soak insulation for a long stretch before it shows up inside the house, and by the time it turns up during a Ridgewood attic visit, the material is usually matted flat and has to be pulled rather than dried in place.
A fair share of Ridgewood's oldest attics still carry knob-and-tube wiring under whatever insulation was added over the decades, and removal is often the first real look anyone has had at those runs in a long time.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Attic Insulation Removal in Ridgewood: Questions We Get
When does a Ridgewood attic need everything removed instead of just added onto?
Contamination and condition, mainly. Material that is dry and clean can usually just be topped, but Ridgewood attics turn up plenty that is not: wet from a slow leak, matted flat from age, or nested in by squirrels, raccoons or bats after a century-old roofline opened up somewhere. Leaving that kind of material under new insulation just conceals whatever triggered the issue to begin with.
What determines how long a Ridgewood attic insulation removal takes?
The volume that needs pulling and the difficulty of reaching it drive most of the timeline. A vacuum job on an open attic goes quickly, while a kneewall attic with tight third-floor access, or heavier wildlife contamination, slows things down because the crew works through angled cavities a straight attic never has. Your actual timeframe is spelled out attic by attic once we have seen the space.
Are there NJ incentives that apply to attic insulation removal in Ridgewood?
Removal by itself typically falls outside the incentive programs, but the new insulation that follows it can often be eligible for support through PSE&G's efficiency offerings, since Ridgewood is PSE&G territory. What is available shifts, so the most useful step is asking us directly at your free inspection what currently applies to the work your attic needs.
Is old attic insulation in a Ridgewood house dangerous to be around?
It can be, mostly because of what it is hiding rather than the material itself. Rodent droppings, mold from a slow leak, or knob-and-tube wiring buried under the fill are the real concerns, part of why removal in an occupied Ridgewood house happens under containment rather than getting handled as a weekend project.
How do you know if my attic needs the insulation removed at all?
The inspection tells us. Staining, matting, odor, droppings or a visible nest mean it comes out; dry material with no history of wildlife usually just gets built on top of instead. A Ridgewood attic with clean original fill often only needs new insulation added, so nothing gets pulled that the space does not actually need removed.
Once the old material is out of my attic, what happens next?
Usually the floor gets sealed first, the top plates, wiring penetrations and any chases closed off, because putting new insulation over an air leak just wastes it. Blown-in fill or batts go down after that, depending on how the attic is built. Most Ridgewood attics get all of it in one visit rather than two separate appointments.
Do you handle attic insulation removal in the towns around Ridgewood as well?
We do, and Bergen County keeps our crews busy well beyond Ridgewood itself, including Waldwick, Wyckoff, Ho-Ho-Kus, Midland Park, Glen Rock and Paramus. If your address sits just outside the village line, it is still very likely within our normal coverage, and we can confirm quickly over the phone.
What actually happens to the insulation after it comes out of my attic?
It gets bagged on site as it comes out and taken off the property for disposal, never left piled in the yard or carried loose back down through the living space. That containment matters even more in a Ridgewood kneewall attic, where the path out often runs straight through a finished hallway, stairwell or bedroom closet.
