How We Remove Old Crawlspace Insulation in Englewood
Crawl space insulation does not last forever. The rods that hold batts up against the joists loosen with age, and once a section lets go, the insulation drops and bunches on the ground, where it soaks up whatever moisture is already down there. On East Hill's higher blocks, where shallow bedrock forces groundwater against the crawl space wall, that failure tends to happen years earlier than it would in a drier part of town.
Removal means getting the old material out entirely, not just tucking the sagging sections back into place. Crews work through the crawl space with vacuum equipment and protective gear, since insulation that has been wet for a while often carries mold, and insulation a squirrel, raccoon or mouse has nested in carries droppings and urine as well. Everything comes out, and the space gets cleared down to the joists before anything else happens.
What happens next depends on what caused the failure in the first place. A crawl space with a straightforward age problem usually just needs new insulation. One with an active moisture problem, especially on East Hill's wetter streets, is more often paired with a sealed vapor barrier so the replacement does not fail the same way. The inspection sorts out which situation a particular crawl space is in, and the estimate is free and written.

What We Find When We Remove Englewood Crawl Space Insulation
The four conditions behind most of the removal calls we get across Englewood.
The metal rods that hold batts against the floor joists loosen after decades of use, and once enough of them let go, the insulation drops and bunches on the crawl space floor instead of doing its job overhead.
On East Hill's higher blocks, groundwater pushed sideways by shallow bedrock keeps old insulation wet for months at a time, which breaks it down and can grow mold well before its expected lifespan is up.
Squirrels, raccoons and mice that get into a crawl space through a foundation vent or a loose crawl door often nest in whatever insulation is closest, leaving droppings and urine that make the material unsafe to leave in place.
A downtown Victorian's original crawl space insulation and a Liberty Road ranch's postwar batts both reach the end of their working life eventually, just on different timelines depending on when the house was built and how wet the ground underneath it runs.

We just had our attic insulation replaced, and the entire experience was pleasant from start to finish. Robert is knowledgeable, honest and easy to work with at the initial estimate period. Roberta and his crew did a great job replacing the attic insulation for our house. They were very professional, efficient and respectful. They did everything that needed to be done and left the space clean and in excellent condition. I am very happy that I chose Master Attic and would highly recommend them.
Dan Jones and the Ronald crew did a great job from start to finish! I had original insulation in my attic with no electricity, not an easy job. Our upstairs was very hot in the summer and cold in winter. With having central air, we still needed AC units and space heaters to manage. Dan set up a great plan to eliminate that. He and his crew were able to come and finish the job shortly after we first met. They were quick, clean and managed to crawl into small spaces to remove old insulation and install fresh insulation. We have already noticed a major difference! Highly recommended!!
We hired Master Attic to clean out debris, mice, old insulation, and replace with new insulation in both our attic spaces. Roberto and his crew did a phenomenal job. They were extremely professional, polite, and did a fantastic job. They invited my husband to see the attic after each step, and took pictures on their phone to show me since I could not get up in the attic. They took the time to protect the space with plastic sheeting before the job up in the attic, and then cleaned up everything perfectly afterwards. I highly recommend them!
Great job by the team. Cleaned out the entire attic and replaced all the old insulation with new fresh insulation. Made a huge difference. Alex was great to work with and was very professional. Would highly recommend.
Awesome experience from start to finish. Rob provided a great assessment and capabilities overview, arrived on time and was very generous and thorough in explaining the work. I signed on the spot. A crew of six arrived (again, on time) and completely transformed our attic space - thoroughly cleaned out the old insulation (looked spotless afterwards), sanitized the space, sealed it/rodent proofed it, added baffles and of course, replaced the insulation and added more in areas that needed it. Completed the whole job in half a day and we are delighted with the result. Thank you, Master Attic team, for a job very well done! Highest recommendation.
What a great experience I had with this company and its employees. It started with initially interacting with Joe who came out for the estimate. He was funny because he came down from my attic and said "have you seen up there". I laughed because I had and I knew it was bad. He was no pressure and no nonsense. Gave me an estimate and said if I wanted we could have the work done next day. I wasn't ready for that but after some schedule juggling I told him we could be ready. Joe had his guys out next morning with the best part being Jorge calling me to advise he was about thirty minutes out. I appreciate when I am given a heads up as to ETA. Three of them arrived Jorge set out plastic and covered exposed furniture. Jorge, Angel and Gonzalo were all polite and worked hard to complete the task. They worked efficiently and were done quickly. Jorge made sure he included me in each step of the process and when I saw the finished product I was amazed. I can actually use my attic for storage if I choose to do so. I did not realize when they were here that they also do work on crawlspace areas. I will be calling them back to see what they can do for my crawlspace which easily rivals the diasaster called my attic. I recommend at least giving this company and its employees an opportunity to help you.
Great company to work with. From beginning to end, Dan came out, spent plenty of time with me going over everything that needed to be done, and the process of everything that needed to be updated it both attics. His professionalism was top notch, answered all my question and concerns. When it came time for George and his six-man crew to do the work their quality of workmanship was well above average, they were here the whole day, and I don't think they even had a lunch break (hopefully I don't get him in trouble). They all worked and everyone knew what their job was, they removed all the insulation, cleaned, spray foamed all holes and top plates, re-insulated both attics and cleaned up like they weren't even here. Will definitely use them again.
Master Attic remediated a bat issue for us back in October and I can’t say enough about what a wonderful job they did. The work was guaranteed and they encouraged us to call if we say any further evidence of bats. Well, there were a few droppings in the attic and they quickly responded to our concerns. Jose’s crew came out on a SUNDAY, inspected the attic, and sealed up several spots that could be entry points. They were professional, efficient, and kind. I would highly recommend them. You will not be disappointed.
Crawlspace Insulation Removal in Englewood: Questions We Get
How do you know if crawlspace insulation actually needs to be removed?
Batts sagging or fallen from the joists, a musty smell rising up through the floor, patches of mold or water staining on the material, and any evidence a rodent has been nesting in it are the clearest signs. An inspection can also catch insulation that still looks fine from below but has already lost most of what it was doing.
How long does removing old crawlspace insulation take in Englewood?
Removal timing tracks two things: how much insulation has already failed, and how far gone it is. A partially sagged section clears out fast, while a crawl space where most of the material is down and contaminated takes real time. That specific schedule goes into the written estimate after the walk-through, not before.
Do PSE&G incentives cover crawlspace insulation removal in Englewood?
Englewood falls within PSE&G's coverage area, and the NJ Clean Energy Program has helped fund insulation replacement in past years, crawl space work included. Exactly what qualifies does not stay fixed for long, so we'll go over anything current while we're there for the free estimate.
Is it safe to be in the house while old crawlspace insulation is being removed?
Yes. The work happens below the living space, and crews use vacuum equipment and protective gear to keep dust and debris contained to the crawl space itself. There is no need to clear out upstairs or plan around the crew, though a strong musty or contaminated smell during removal is normal and clears once the old material and any lingering droppings are gone.
How do you decide what has to come out versus what can stay?
The inspection checks moisture content, whether the material is still attached to the joists, and whether there is any sign of rodent activity. Dry, intact, uncontaminated insulation can often stay. Anything wet, sagging or nested in comes out, since leaving it in place just delays a problem that will keep getting worse.
Do you install new insulation immediately after the old material is out?
Usually, but not always right away. If groundwater is what caused the failure, a sealed vapor barrier often goes in first so the new insulation is not just repeating the same problem. The inspection determines whether that extra step applies to a particular crawl space.
What other Bergen County towns do you remove crawlspace insulation in?
Removal calls bring us through Englewood Cliffs, Leonia, Tenafly, Teaneck and Bergenfield on a routine basis, plus south to Cliffside Park along the Palisades. A crew is always within easy reach, and the failure patterns we see in those towns, sagging batts, groundwater against a foundation wall, wildlife-contaminated insulation, match what turns up in Englewood as well.
Why does insulation on East Hill seem to fail faster than in other parts of Englewood?
Shallow bedrock on East Hill pushes groundwater sideways into crawl space walls instead of letting it drain downhill, which keeps insulation wet for far longer than it stays in lower, better-draining parts of Englewood. Wet insulation breaks down faster than dry insulation does, no matter how it was installed.
